Golf Pro - Dream Job?
A Professional Golfer is one who plays golf to make money. A Golf Professional is one who teaches others about this fine game to make money. Are you one of those dreamers who thinks they should leave the cubicles behind for the green pastures of the Golf profession as a Golf Pro? Look before you leap.
I've talked and met with many golf pros and there are a lot of perks that come with the territory. There is an old saying I hear all the time from these guys and gals, "If want to play golf don't work in the golf industry." On the outside, it looks great. Your office is on the range, teaching people how to hit the little white ball farther and straighter. Playing golf for free anywhere, anytime. It's paradise with a paycheck!
Not exactly. In real life, golf pros spend a lot of time in the pro shop ringing the register. In some ways it's a glorified management position, where they manage the pro shop and golf course. Each facility is different and this isn't the case for all, but for mid to low end courses, this is more of the reality. Long hours are common with long work weeks including holidays and weekends. What about all that teaching and range work? They do lessons, but it's not an all day affair. What about all that free golf? Most pros I've talked with have a hard time remembering when they played last.
Many pros have families. They're at the course all day and need to get home to spend time with the family. It's a job and can become a grind like any other work situation. It's certainly not all doom and gloom especially for the young, single pros. This was just a reminder while the other side of the fence looks greener, it's not always what you perceive it to be.
Prost!

Thanks for the advice

I still believe that if you have a job that you are interested in doing, (you must be interested in it if you are a pro)then I wouldn't complain, of course not everything is perfect and fun but if you look too the good sides they must greatly outnumber the not so good ones.

Most of the time, a job candidate is trying to make sure they are a good fit for the employer, but it is also important to make sure the 'Employer is a Good Fit' for you, too.

It is becoming very difficult to find jobs in some professions. Also, the jobs that are available in those professions are usually being snatched up by the most experienced people, meaning that the recent college graduate is a bit out of luck.

What type of job do you dream about? Some of us know from the time we are very young what we want to do when we grow up. Others are still trying to figure.

More importantly, you can follow other people — specifically people who're living and working your dream job. Follow them, watch what they do.

Great post - 99.999% of golf pros AREN'T playing in the majors - they're playing small tournaments making ends meet, away from the family much of the time.
